Both male and female winners of the Big Millennium Marathon 2018, which is the only internationally certified race in Ghana will participate in the 2019 Dubai International Marathon in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
This was disclosed by Mrs. Catherine Morton, race director of the Big Millennium Marathon in an interview with Michael Oduro of Metro Tv on Thursday.
According to Mrs. Morton, the Millennium Marathon comes of on September 22, 2018 and two races would be run comprising the 5km (fun race) and 21km (elite race) which is the half marathon race.
She said fantastic prizes have been put at stake for winners; the 21km winners take home $2, 500 and the 5km winners get $500. There are prizes for the first ten finishers in both races.
The highlight of this year’s event is the Special Raffle which has a brand new Nissan Kick SUV for the winner.
According to Mariam Ismail, the raffle is to spice the event and encourage more people to come out and walk, jog, run and socialize. She noted that people who are interested in the raffle can register on their mobile phone by dialing *800*17# and join or register at the Accra Sports Stadium, Accra, Mall, Decathlon, the University of Ghana,, Legon, BFC at Dansoman, Frankies Hotel at Osu or Elite Sports at Labone.
As the Face of the Millennium Marathon from Tanzania, she is encouraging many East Africans from Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda and Rwanda to join Ghanaians and people from other parts of the world to make the event a success.
She hinted that the organisers are expecting over 10,000 participants and are ready to go with a few weeks to the D Day at the Independence Square also known as the Black Star Square.
“I can’t wait to see the crowd on that day” she expressed.
Cathy Morton disclosed that security and ambulance arrangements have been made with the support of the Ghana Police and Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), while medicals and insurance issues would be taken care by Impact Clinic and Allianz Insurance.
Some of the companies supporting the Big Millennium Marathon 2018 are Japan Motors, Unilever, Accra Mall, Papaye Foods, Blue Skies, Can-West, Royal Habits, Whirlpool, Garmain, Wigal, Twellium Industries Ltd, ddp, MenzGold, MTN, National Lotteries Authority (NLA) and Elite Sports.
The event which boasts living healthy lifestyles, clean environment, tourism and business has been sanctioned by the National Sports Authority (NSA), Ministries of Health, Tourism, Youth and Sports.
