Four persons have lost their lives when a Biakoye District Assembly vehicle with Registration Number GM 2252-11, which was being driven by a man believed to be the brother of the District Chief Executive, Comfort Attah, crashed with a Sprinter Bus with Registration Number GE 2407-16 in Jasikan of the Volta Region on Monday January 1, 2019.
It was confirmed that although there were no deaths at the scene of the accidents, the four (4) passed away at the various hospitals where they were receiving treatment.
The injured according to reports from the Region, are receiving treatment in Ho, Hohoe and Worawora hospitals.
Although the DCE herself was not in the vehicle at the time of the accident, information received indicate that the said vehicle was being driven by her brother, Prince Attah popularly called Yevu, in whose care the DCE, Comfort Attah had left the vehicle.
The DCE’s brother, according to reports was drunk and was driving in the company of some ladies when they met the unfortunate incident.
Meanwhile, checks from the Assembly also revealed that the driver of the vehicle on the day of the accident is also not the official driver working with the District Assembly.
Speaking to an eye witness, he said “the driver is the DCE’s brother who always moves around with the vehicle with loud music in the company of some girls. They were even on their usual cruise when the accident occurred.”
Meanwhile, questions are being asked as to why an official car belonging to the Assembly would be given to an outsider and not to an official driver of the Assembly.
“If this people are not official workers of the Assembly before they are using the car then, they have to be arrested. We need answers as to who gave them the authority to use the car and whether the driver is a staff of the Assembly,” an Assemblyman said on anonymity.
According to some Assembly members, they want to know the legitimate and officially assigned driver to that vehicle since it is a serious offense for unauthorised person to drive government vehicle especially out of working days.
Apparently, the Assembly members said the accident will become a burden on the Assembly and for that matter government, which will be compelled to bear the full cost of the fatalities and hospital bills as well as insurance for those who lost their lives.
They called on the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development to launch an investigations into why the Assembly vehicle will be handed over to a non-staff to use.
Attempts to get the DCE to comment on the issue proved futile.
