The Birim Central Municipal Education Directorate in collaboration with the Ghana Library Authority have organised the maiden reading festival for early grade learners (Basic1) to Basic (3) ) in Ghanaian and English languages.
The event was under the theme “learn to read, read to learn”.
As part of the festival an inter-circuit competition was held at the DC Kwaakye Library Complex in AKIM Oda among three circuits. In the end circuit C placed first whiles circuit D place second and circuit B took the third place.
The following students qualified to represent the Municipality in the upcoming regional competition :
(Basic 1)Charlotte Baidoo, Mohammed Sumaila,, Righteous Senyor and Enerst Boateng.
(Basic 2) qualifiers are Essien, Selina Kwarkyewa, Phoebe and Godfred Gyedu.
Basic 3 qualifiers are; Nana Yaw Frimpong, Edna Ansah, Jessica Appiah, Clinton Boateng, Kenneth Baafi and Joseph.
The Birim Central Municipal Education Director, Mrs. Esther Sowah Quaye, in an interview with Ghananews247.com stated that, they have not regretted organizing such a program for the pupils as it will help improve quality teaching and learning.
She said reading is the foundation we have to give to our kids.
She urged teachers and parents to as a matter of urgency help their children in reading.
Mrs. Esther Sowah Quaye adviced teachers to read and apply the things they learn from workshops to help their students.
In her address, she stressed that, since children spend more time in the house, parents should put measures that will encourage reading at home.
Mr. Frank Nkansah, the representative of the MP for Akyem Oda Constituency, in delivering a speech, pleaded with the teachers to be patient always with the students. He said, sometimes some of the teachers put too much fear in the students and that affect them in their education.
He further, congratulated the education directorate and the Library Authority for organizing such a wonderful program for the pupils as it will help improve their reading skills.
He also thanked the MP for supporting the event in kind and in cash.
