Chief Restraint Subjects From Exercising Their Franchise In Just Ended Assembly Elections

The people of Otepirow in Agona Swedru in the Central Region were yesterday restraint from exercising their franchise in the just ended Assembly elections by a group of young men in the area.

The action by the young men, according to sources, follows an announcement by the Chief, Nana Osompa, on the premise that the area has been deprived of developmental projects by successive governments, hence there is no need for the people to partake in any electioneering exercise again.

However, the decision and order by the Chief was described by many of the indigenes of the town who had travelled far and near to exercise their franchise as a violation of their fundamental basic rights, as anyone who refuses to abide by the orders of the Chief is threatened to be summoned to the palace.

When Ghananews247.com visited the area, there was not a single person who attempted to vote, despite the fact that the electoral officials were set for the exercise. But further investigation in the area reveal that the Chief’s action was not jus because of lack of developmental projects in the area, but also because the people had decided to vote against one of the candidates who was contesting on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over lack of confidence in him to serve them.
