VC pays courtesy call on Team UEW

…as women’s handball team maintains 12 year Unbeaten record at the 2020 GUSA games

The Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Rev. Fr. Prof Anthony Afful-Broni yesterday paid a visit to the athletes and officials of team UEW at the University of Ghana, Legon. Accompanying the VC were the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof Andy Ofori – Birinkorang and the Registrar Surv. Paul Osei Barima, Esq.

The visit which was first of its kind by any VC of UEW was greeted with joy from officials and athletes as it visibly boosted their morale.

Welcoming the VC and some members of his Management team to Legon, the Chairman of the Amalgamated Sports Clubs, Dr Kwame Kyere Diabour thanked the VC and his Management team for their overwhelming support throughout camping to the GUSA games at Legon.

He took advantage of the opportunity to brief Management on the successes chalked so far highlighting the record breaking performances by UEW athletes at GUSA 2020 games.

All the record breaking athletes as well as gold medalist were introduced to management amidst loud applause from the Contingent.

On his part, the VC, Rev Fr. Professor A Afful-Broni congratulated the athletes for their sterling performances and assured them of Management’s ongoing support for the team. He noted that UEW is an institution that values sports. He indicated that the University would strongly continue to support sports men and women financially, in infrastructure and equipment.

He urged all the athletes to be focused and disciplined both at training and at the competitions to positively project the image of UEW.

Earlier the VC and his management team had met with the officials of team UEW. Speaking at the meeting, the Registrar Mr. Paul Osei Barima, Esq was impressed by the performances of team UEW. He was also very much happy by the way the University was being promoted through sports at GUSA. He thanked all the officials for sacrificing their Christmas and new year break and also for a great job done.

Speaking at the meeting, the Principal coach of UEW, Baba Apidogo noted that, the visit by the VC and some members of his Management team was the first in the history of GUSA games for team UEW.

The visit by the VC and his management team boosted the morale and confidence of the athletes resulting in the winning of three gold medals by the handball and badminton women teams. By this feat team UEW can now confidently boost of 15 gold medals in competition.

This has brought smiles to the faces of officials and athletes of UEW after the men’s soccer team having cheaply given out the much needed win against the University of Ghana (UG) yesterday at Mensah Sabah field.

The UG fetched an equalizer in the said match just some seconds to the end of the game following an infringement committed by UEW around the 18 yards box of their area. UG converted their chances at the penalty shootout to beat UEW by 4:3.

This painful defeat according to some officials and athletes who spoke to Radio Windy Bay would never be forgotten since UEW was in pole position for gold in men’s soccer.
